Wood. the traditional boat building material used for hull and spar construction. it is buoyant, widely available and easily worked. it is a popular material for small boats (of e.g. 6-metre (20 ft) length; such as dinghies and sailboats).. Some may suggest using bondo or other filler to fix a bumpy hull. i would if weight was not an issue, such as with a tug boat or other displacing hull. with a planing boat, i'd rather live with the uneven hull, but optimize for performance.. Greatest threat to structure of a boat like this is slamming loads at speed in a chop. not the place to skimp on hull thickness. go with what the designer has in the plans. the outer layer of laminate is for strength and is only longitudinal for appearance. no one can accurately predict what these slamming loads will be..
On that basis, an epoxy composite hull weighing the same as an aluminium hull will have much more thickness in its hull. besides, wood floats. i have the benefit of three sons of 24, 19 and 16, who are incredibly keen to build this 45 footer as they like boating.. Speed strip is the ultimate strip planking material for many applications in boat building, repair and restoration. it is the fastest, easiest way to build a strong, rigid, lightweight wooden structure. principal uses include hull and plug construction, decks, hardtops, and cabin sides.. Dave gerr's ocean racer holger danske, a very light boat built out of wood (photo courtesy of gerr marine) gusto, a chuck paine design, is a modern wood-epoxy cruising boat with more traditional lines (photo courtesy of chuck paine) wood-epoxy boats can also, of course, be found on the used-boat market..
