Our edexcel level 3 nvq qualifications in marine engineering - wooden yacht and boat building (pathway 20) have been developed in collaboration with the sector skills council for engineering and employers within the engineering sector, using the most recent national occupational standards.. Boat building academy students learn by building and working on a wide range of real boats selected for: 1. educational value. 2. relevance to students’ aspirations. 3. the requirements of the contemporary marine industry. some students are offered the opportunity to build a boat for themselves as part of the course.. Entry requirements. to become a boat builder you need to complete an apprenticeship and gain one of the following certificates, depending on your specialisation: new zealand certificate in boat building (alloy, composite, steel, wood) (level 4) new zealand certificate in marine coatings (interior/exterior) (level 4).
